Background:
Dr. Abraham did his Fellowship in Hematology and Oncology from the National Cancer Institute and National Heart Lung and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, MD. He did his residency at School of Medicine, University of Connecticut, CT and Medical degree from Calicut Medical College in India

Research focus:
Dr. Abraham is dedicated to research in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment. He is the co-leader of the breast cancer program at MBRCC.

At the National Cancer Institute (www.cancer.gov), he did studies on multi-drug resistance and   he was the study chairman of the first phase I clinical trial on epothilone B analogue BMS 247550, which is FDA approved as Ixempra®

Currently, he is the principal investigator for more than 10 clinical trials at WVU. He is the Institutional Principal Investigator for all the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) and National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bowel Project (NSABP) clinical trials. His translational research interest is focused on understanding the pathophysiology of Chemotherapy induced cognitive dysfunction. His group has developed, preclinical, clinical and genomic data in this serious side effect in patients receiving chemotherapy. He is also working on genomic based risk stratification of breast cancer and holds a patent in this method.

 Abraham has published scientific papers in many journals, including the Journal of Clinical Oncology, Annals of Internal Medicine, Clinical Cancer Research, and Cancer and Bone Marrow Transplantation. He also serves as editor of the Community Translations section of the journal Community Oncology. He has edited a 700-page textbook, Bethesda Handbook of Clinical Oncology, published by Lippincott Williams and Wilkins. Which is in its third edition now.  It is one of the best selling handbooks in Oncology. He edited another book in 2007, Breast Cancer: a Clinical Guide, published by Lippincott Williams and Wilkins, Philadelphia. He is the editor of Community Translation section of the Journal Community Oncology (www.communityoncology.net), by Elsevier, NY.  He is also the chief editor of the Emerging Cancer Therapeutics series, published by Demos publication in New York.
He serves on the NSABP Breast Committee (www.nsabp.pitt.edu) and the board of directors of the South Atlantic Division of the American Cancer Society (www.cancer.org).

Dr. Abraham's work has been recognized by several organizations. Recently he was appointed as the first Bonnie Wells Wilson and Distinguished Professor and Eminent Scholar in Breast Cancer Research.  He received a Merit Award from the American Society of Clinical Oncology (2001), the Idea Award and Career Development Award from the Department of Defense (2002), and volunteer of the year award from the American Cancer Society, WV chapter. He received the Clinician of the Year Award (2006) and Outstanding Faculty Award (2007) by the Department of Medicine. He received the Best in the Class award by the West Virginia University Hospitals for outstanding patient satisfaction by the Press Ganey survey in 2009.

Over the past 8 years he has presented more than 100 invited talks on breast cancer treatment in different parts of the country and abroad.
