Bio

Courtney Newkirk was born in Montgomery, West Virginia, a small town outside of the state’s capitol.  In 2006, she attended West Virginia University pursuing a degree in Exercise Physiology concentrating in Health Professions.  Upon graduation, she earned a job in the Administrative Offices of MedExpress Urgent Care, which shifted her career focus from patient care to health care administration.  Ms. Newkirk then pursued her Master's of Public Health degree with an emphasis in Health Policy, Management, and Leadership in 2014.  Over the course of her program, she served as the President of the Student Association for Public Health, Chair of the West Virginia Public Health Association Student Affiliate, and a WVU School of Public Health Dean's Ambassador.  She was also asked to participate in the efforts of the WVU Health Sciences Center Diversity Task Force, was granted an internship with Johns Hopkins Hospital, and was a recipient of the 2015 William M. Murray Public Health Education Endowed Scholarship Award.  After graduation, Courtney plans to earn an executive position in administration of a large, academic, health system.  She also wants to start a health care consulting firm focused on quality, finance, and overall operations after years of service in the hospital setting.  In efforts to give back to her community, Ms. Newkirk also plans to start a nationwide rooftop garden project where children and seniors come together to plant fruits and vegetables.  The crops will be donated to local farmer's markets and food pantries in hopes to increase healthy food access.
