Associate vice president of transplant services named

Michael A. Shullo, PharmD, will be joining the WVU Medicine leadership team as associate vice president of transplant services. He is coming to WVU Medicine to develop new solid organ transplant programs at J.W. Ruby Memorial Hospital. His first day is Jan. 2, 2018.

Shullo currently serves as the co-director of advanced heart failure for UPMC’s Heart and Vascular Program. In this role, he provides administrative leadership for heart transplantation and the artificial heart program. Prior to that, he served as the associate director of cardiac transplantation and the director of pharmacotherapy for artificial heart.

Shullo is also an associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Pharmacy and an associate member at the Thomas E. Starzl Transplantation Research Institute. He is the solid organ transplant specialty pharmacy residency director and an active transplant preceptor of both medical and pharmacy fellows, residents, and students.

Shullo earned both his doctorate and undergraduate degrees in pharmacy from the University of Pittsburgh and completed residency training at UPMC/University of Pittsburgh. His career started in renal transplantation and has touched all transplanted organs in some way.

During his time at UPMC, he has developed several innovative and successful transplant practice models and had adapted to the changing landscape of healthcare and solid organ transplantation.

Shullo has an international reputation in solid organ transplantation through transplant society involvement and leadership, publications, and invited presentations. His honors include several university and external teaching and mentorship awards, including the Rho Chi Innovation in Teaching Award, the Cohen Teacher of the Year, and the Best Educational Presentation Award (ISHLT Transplant Academy).
