Nurses Week message from Chief Nursing Officer Doug Mitchell

The following message is from Doug Mitchell, WVU Medicine-WVU Hospitals vice president and chief nursing officer:

Dear Nurses and all Nursing Services team members,

Happy Nurses Week!

I attended a college graduation convocation yesterday (May 6) and had the opportunity to hear a message from Dr. Susan Desmond-Helmann, CEO of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation. Dr. Desmond-Helmann spoke of her career and how the turning point was when she went from an “I” focus to an “us” focus. In other words, she changed her career focus from advancing herself to advancing others.

As I listened to her speak, it occurred to me that advancing others is what nurses do, day in and day out, oftentimes at their own peril.

Putting the needs of others above their own, and providing safe, competent, and accurate care, which is respectful, compassionate, and empathetic, is the norm. This is done at times when resources are not always ideal, sometimes without a break or with tight staffing. This is done at times when family get-togethers are occurring, when the turkey is being carved at Thanksgiving, and when there is major stress or even crisis at home. But it is always done. Others before self...this is nursing.

Nursing, done well, with mind, body, and heart, is as noble as anything that a person can do.  Know that you make a difference every day, that your work matters, and that you change lives!

Take this week to reflect on the difference that you make. Know that you are appreciated by me, administration, your leaders, your colleagues, both nurses and others, and your patients and their families, although not stated nearly enough.

Take this week and enjoy yourself. Go to a drumming circle, get your hands blessed, eat some treats, and remind your loved ones at home that this is Nurses Week and you deserve some extra TLC!

Take this week to take good care of yourself and to rededicate yourself to the care of others. A healthier you makes you even more effective as a caregiver.

Enjoy the week and take pride in a job well done!

Happy Nurses Week and thanks for all you do!

Doug
