Nursing professor receives Benedum grant for rural care research
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. – Joy Buck, Ph.D., R.N., has been awarded a $122,000 research grant from the Claude Worthington Benedum Foundation to continue her research into integrated palliative care and chronic and advanced illness. Dr. Buck serves as an associate professor at the West Virginia University School of Nursing and as an adjunct professor at the WVU School of Medicine, Eastern Division.
“Building Bridges to Integrated Palliative Care: A Lay/Interprofessional Education Collaborative” is a two-year participatory study that evolved from two other Benedum Foundation-funded projects and a three-year NIH funded study led by Buck. The new project is an intervention study that aims to improve the quality and cost-effectiveness of care for persons with chronic and advanced illness and their caregivers.
“We are extremely excited about the innovative research Dr. Buck is conducting in the Eastern Panhandle,” Elisabeth Shelton, Ph.D., R.N., interim dean of the WVU School of Nursing, said. “Her work has the potential to significantly improve the well-being of patients who are seriously and chronically ill and their families as well as positively impact the cost associated with the provision of such care.”

Bridges to Healthy Transitions projects focus on structures, processes and transitions that impact the care and quality of life of underserved and medically complex populations. The research engages both the community and multiple health disciplines, including nursing, public health, medicine and social work. The work involves comprehensive assessment, planning, and intervention to reduce health disparities and improve quality of life in the region and the state.
