School of Nursing coordinating “Food Security Day of Service” for McDowell County residents

Residents of McDowell County need our help.

As part of WVU’s 12 BIG! Days of Service, the WVU School of Nursing is coordinating “Food Security Day” by collecting non-perishable food items for the McDowell County food bank. The recent closure of the local Walmart, which provided between 1,500 and 3,300 pounds of food per week, has left Five Loaves & Two Fishes food pantry in need of donations. The pantry also provides “school break bags” on weekends/holidays to children who otherwise might not have food to eat.

Items needed include: granola bars, single oatmeal packets, small boxes of cereal, applesauce/fruit/pudding cups, canned chicken/tuna, soups, “pop top” canned foods, juice boxes, shelf milk, macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, pork and beans, and Spam.

Service is deeply engrained in the WVU culture, and the 12 BIG! Days of Service features the amazing work and giving spirit of WVU students, faculty and staff. If you would like to donate items to this food drive, please bring all non-perishable items to the WVU School of Nursing Dean’s Suite located on the 6th Floor by noon on Friday, March 18.
