5K to be held Sept. 21

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Runners and walkers will take to the pavement around Ruby Memorial Hospital for the 21st annual September Stride 5K at 9 a.m. on Sept. 21.

The 5K run and walk is organized by the WVU Healthcare Rehabilitation Services Department. Event proceeds benefit the Richard Rosenbaum Memorial Fund, which provides medication and equipment to patients with cystic fibrosis and other pulmonary problems.

September Stride begins and ends in the Ruby Memorial Hospital parking lot. It is a rolling, two loop course with one water stop and mile split times.

Special races as well as arts and crafts will be available for kids. There will be three races for kids: two short runs for younger kids, as well as a half mile for older children. Participation is free, but children must be registered at the kids’ tent in advance. The kids’ races begin at 10 a.m.

WVU students can earn two hours of volunteer credit by participating in this race.

Cash prizes will be awarded for the first three male and female finishers. First place receives $150, second receives $100 and third receives $50. There is also a $100 prize for a new course record. The current course record for men is 15:11 and 16:34 for women.

There is a heavyweight category for men who weigh more than 200 lbs. Heavyweight competitors must weigh in at registration.

The top three male and female finishers in the 5K run who work for WVU Healthcare or WVU Health Sciences will receive prizes.

Competitors present at the end of the race will be eligible for a variety of random prizes.

The first 200 pre-registered participants are guaranteed a shirt. Online registration will be open until 5 p.m. on Sept. 18. Cost of registration is $20 until midnight on Sept. 13. The fee for employees of WVU Healthcare and Health Sciences is $18. After Sept. 13, the registration fee is $25 for all participants.
