The Wright Stuff: A life-changing announcement for people who are in the business of changing lives

A message to the WVU Medicine West Virginia University Health System family

We’re in the business of changing lives – every day. And today’s announcement, one that highlights our commitment to you and your family, will allow us to change even more lives.

Beginning in August, we will roll out a “dependent child tuition assistance benefit,” which means the West Virginia University Health System will reimburse certain, eligible employees for the university tuition of their children who attend West Virginia University to obtain a four-year, baccalaureate degree. This will apply to all eligible employees across the entire health system.

If you are a full-time employee of the West Virginia University Health System or its hospitals and have worked for the organization for five or more years, your child’s base, university tuition at WVU is covered. For those of you who are part-time or who have children attending a college or university other than WVU, we’ll help cover part of that tuition cost, as well.

We’re doing this for three reasons:

  1. We want to recognize the loyalty and longevity of our employees who’ve been here for five or more years. The consistency and steady hand they bring is critical, especially as we continue to grow and expand our services.
  2. We also want to invest further in those longer-term employees by ensuring they have the resources to send their children to college so that they can pursue their career and educational goals more easily.
  3. And finally, we also want to invest in our great state of West Virginia. I’m a big advocate of higher education and strongly believe that this program will help move West Virginia forward. More college graduates will help lead us to a brighter future!

We’re also doing this because of your direct feedback and input. This has been a common thread in meetings I’ve had with many of you, along with input I’ve received in engagement surveys and employee focus groups, and I wanted to share this information with you as soon as possible, as many of you might be close to making a decision with your children about which college or university they might choose to attend in the fall of 2018.

Yes, this is a big investment for us to make, but it’s one we’re willing to make, as it’s an investment in our most important asset – you. It’s also a reward for those who have been loyal, long-term employees. Because of you, we’ve become one of the top academic medical centers in the country.

In August, we are also going to introduce a new employee tuition benefit. Guidelines for that program are also attached.

As always, thank you so much for everything you do in support of our patients and their families. Happy New Year!
