World-renowned surgeon to present 'ECMO: Past, Present and Future' on Wednesday

Medical pioneer and world-renowned surgeon Robert H. Bartlett, MD, will present "ECMO: Past, Present and Future" at 8 a.m. Wednesday, June 17, in Okey Patteson Auditorium, located on the first floor of the Health Sciences Center.

Dr. Barlett's presentation will be part of Grand Rounds presented by the WVU Department of Pediatrics. All departments and units at the HSC and WVU Healthcare are invited.

ECMO, which stands for extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, is a form of life support that removes blood from the patient’s body, runs it through a machine that removes carbon dioxide and replaces the oxygen in the blood, then returns the blood to the patient’s body. The process takes the strain off the patient’s heart and lungs to allow him or her to recover from an injury or illness. WVU Healthcare began offering this service for pediatric patients at WVU Children's Hospital in November 2014.
