Poster winners from the 2017 Van Liere Research Day at WVU HSC.

Congratulations to the nearly 30 residents, postdoctoral and clinical fellows, undergraduate, graduate and professional students who presented their cancer research during the 2017 Van Liere Memorial Convocation and Health Sciences Center Research Day last week. The annual two day event celebrates research at WVU’s Health Sciences Center. Here are the five winners of cancer-related research in the Van Liere poster presentation, along with the titles of their research and their mentors:

Walid Radwan presented Cadherin-mediated radio-sensitization in GBM involves down-regulation of anti-apoptotic Bcl-2. Walid is a post graduate, year four resident in neurosurgery.
Mentor: Christopher Cifarelli, MD, PhD, director, WVU Dept. of Neurosurgery Gamma Knife Program, member of the WVU Cancer Institute Mechanisms of Metastasis & Therapeutic Response Program

Christopher Pitzer presented Metabolic monitoring and cage activity in mice exposed to 7-months of electronic cigarette vapor. Christopher is a first year MS student in Exercise Physiology.

James Boothe presented Inhibition of the Ras-MAPK pathway induces mesenchymal-to-epithelial transition in mesenchymal breast cancer cells. James is a second year medical student.

Yuriy Loskutov presented Primary cilium points at LPA signaling as a novel therapeutic target in GBM. Yuriy is a graduate student in the Cancer Institute’s Cancer Cell Biology Program.

Karen Hayes presented The Discovery of Novel Non-Coding Circular RNAs Generated by High-Risk Human Papillomavirus Type 16. Karen is a post doctoral fellow in Ivan Martinez’s lab at the WVU Cancer Institute. Dr. Martinez, WVU Dept. of Microbiology, Immunology & Cell Biology, is a member of the WVU Cancer Institute Sara Crile Allen and James Frederick Allen Lung Cancer Program.
