WVU Medicine sponsors walk at Charles Town Farmers Market

CHARLES TOWN, W.Va. – WVU Medicine, Charles Town Rotary Club, and the Charles Town Farmers Market are sponsoring Walk with a Doc, a walking program for everyone interested in taking steps for a healthier lifestyle and, at the same time, having the opportunity to have questions answered by local physicians.

According to the American Heart Association, walking has the lowest dropout rate of any physical activity. With a doctor’s OK, walking is safe for people with orthopaedic ailments, heart conditions, and those who are more than 20 percent overweight. In addition, research has shown that an individual could gain two hours of life for each hour of regular exercise.

Walk with a Doc in Charles Town starts and ends at the Charles Town Farmers Market on the third Saturday of each month at 9 a.m. beginning April 21. WVU Medicine’s Madison Humerick, M.D., will lead the walk each month.

“We do a 30 minute walk at your own pace and encourage participants of all fitness levels to join us,” Dr. Humerick said. “After the walk, you can pick up some local groceries and take advantage of the Double Your SNAP Dollars Program.”

No special gear is needed, and there are no special rules. Just put on a pair of comfortable shoes, and come out and Walk with a Doc to get started on the road to good health.

A live cooking demonstration of healthy recipes will also be presented by the WVU MedCHEFS and a local chef at 10 a.m. at Jefferson County Community Ministries. The public is invited to attend.
