WVU Pharmacy students to host seminar for Alzheimer’s disease caregivers

Event Date: 03/15/2015 from 02:00 PM - 05:00 PM

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — Second-year students from the West Virginia University School of Pharmacy are hosting a seminar to educate caregivers of people with Alzheimer's disease. The event will take place from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 15 in the WVU Mountainlair in Morgantown.

An educational session will take place at 2 p.m. in the Laurel Room, located on the second floor of the Mountainlair. Attendees will receive information on stress relief, medication storage safety, over-the-counter medications, fall prevention, and will learn exercises they can do with their patient or loved one in order to reduce hospitalizations due to preventable injuries. The exercise and fall prevention information will be provided by students from the WVU School of Medicine Physical Therapy program.

At the end of the educational session, the students will offer a free game of bowling in the Mountainlair to caregivers. This social time is meant to be a stress-relief activity and an opportunity for caregivers to connect and build a network of support.

The student pharmacists are working with the Alzheimer’s Association of West Virginia as part of their Introductory Pharmacy Practice Experiences course, which promotes service to the community. The students were partnered with the Alzheimer’s Association of West Virginia through the WVU Center for Service and Learning.

Refreshments will be provided. Parking in the Mountainlair Garage is free on weekends.
