WVU student wins poster contest at the 2016 National American College of Physicians meeting

Second-year WVU medical student, Nainika Nanda, recently discovered that her research poster and oral presentation won in the Medical Student Poster Competition at the 2016 National American College of Physicians’(ACP) annual meeting in Washington, D.C.

Fellows, residents and medical students participate in poster and oral competitions presenting their research. In the fall, Nanda presented her research at West Virginia’s annual ACP meeting in the Oral Presentation Competition and won, giving her the opportunity to represent West Virginia at the national competition. 

There were almost 200 competitors in the Medical Student Poster Competition this year representing chapters and schools from around the country, of which five winners were chosen. Nanda’s project entitled, “Detecting Pancreatic Cancer in the Blood,” was part of an effort to develop a clinical, noninvasive, blood-based detection test for pancreatic cancer.

“Currently, there is little hope for most people who are diagnosed with this devastating disease,” said Nanda. “Hopefully, engaging people in the future clinical applications of this screening test shines a small glimmer of hope on those who have suffered, their loved ones, and those to come. I am inspired to continue the pursuit to push the boundaries of medicine to achieve this.”
