Implementation of dental sleep medicine in dental curricula

DeBiase CB, Wiener RC. Implementation of dental sleep medicine in dental curricula. Journal of Dental Education 2022; Feb 111 https://doi.org/10.1002/jdd.12906.

The article, by Christina B. DeBiase, MA, EdD, and R. Constance Wiener, DMD, Ph.D., has been accepted for publication and has been posted online.

The authors found a need for dentists to do more in addressing Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA), including evaluating airway size, using appropriate sleep diagnostic tools, and understanding results from sleep study tests to help with interventions in growth, appliance fabrication, and myofunction. By introducing a dental sleep medicine curriculum for predoctoral students and dental hygiene students, the integration reinforces learning across disciplines.
