Electron Microscopy Core Facility
The WVU Electron Microscopy Core Facility in Pathology provides instrumentation and scientific support for electron microscopy needs. The facility routinely performs transmission electron microscopic analysis of human, animal, and cell cultures. A JEOL JEM 1010 transmission electron microscope with new AMT Hamamatsu Orca-HR digital camera and imaging system is available in HSC North. In addition, WVU has two other transmission electron microscopes: Zeiss Libra 120 with two digital cameras (in the BRNI Building) and JEOL JEM 2100 (in Engineering). State of the art preparatory equipment to process, embed, and cut thick and thin sections for TEM is available in the lab. Conventional processing and microwave processing are available.
Sample preparation for scanning electron microscopy can be performed in the EM Core Facility in Pathology. Samples can be fixed, dehydrated, chemically dried, and attached to stubs. If critical point drying is needed, a Tousimis Autosamdri-815 CO2 critical point dryer is available in the Engineering Microscopy Core Facility. Scanning electron microscopes (JEOL JSM-7600F and Hitachi S-4700F) are available in Engineering.
The facility is directed by Judy King, M.D., Ph.D. who has over 30 years of experience with transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. Becky Radabaugh, HT(ASCP) QIHC, is the EM Supervisor, and oversees the day-to-day operations of the facility including the JEOL TEM. Two other EM Pathology Assistants are available to assist in EM preparation and training.
The facility is housed in a 360 sq ft laboratory on the 2nd floor of the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center North building (Room 2114). The JEOL TEM is housed in an approximately 200 sq ft space in the basement of the building.
