Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I arrange to be seen at Student Health Service (SHS)?
A: Call 293-2311 during regular work hours, and follow the instructions to obtain medical, or gynecological appointments. Call 293-6972 to obtain mental health appointments and Student Assistance Program (SAP) and 293-6584 for Health Education assistance.

Q: What is the cost of and payment options of a medical evaluation?
A: There is a $10 co-payment due at the time of your medical appointment. The costs for complete physical examination or gynecology appointments, are $25 and $30, respectively, and are available on a limited basis. Payment may be in the form of cash, check, charged to your Mountie Bounty account, or charged to your student account. Debit cards and credit cards are not accepted.

Q: What does the co-payment cover?
A: Your evaluation by our staff is covered and limited laboratory and x-ray studies are covered.

Q: What do I need at my appointment?
A: Your WVU Mountaineer Student ID and co-payment are needed. Once you have been seen at SHS you will be provided a blue Patient Identification Card which should accompany you to subsequent visits. A basic knowledge of your medical history including current medications and known allergies is most helpful.

Q: Will I be billed for laboratory and x-ray studies?
A: Our staff will explain if these services will be charged to you. If medical insurance coverage is involved, you are responsible for submitting the charges to your insurance company, and making payment for that which is not covered by insurance.

Q: Where is SHS located?
A: Please follow the directions to Health Sciences Center South on the Medical Center Campus on this website.

Q: What gynecology and birth control is available?
A: The Family Planning Program is a federally funded program which allows you to receive contraceptive supplies. The need for GYN appointments is reserved for annual medical exam, including a gynecologic exam (a pelvic exam) and PAP smear, which is a requirement of The Family Planning Program. "Female concerns" including vaginal discharges and irritations in the anatomy covered by underwear, can be addressed in a Medical Appointment despite them being of a gynecological nature.

Q: What options are available after hours?
A: If you call 293-2311 after closure of the clinic you may choose to be connected to The Health Line. A nurse can recommend if your problem should or shouldn’t await until a later time, offering self-help measures until our clinic opens.

Q: How may I acquire copies of my medical records?
A: You are required to present a signed Authorization for Release of Information provided on this website. Print out the form from the website, and sign it. You may hand carry, mail or fax the form to us. There is a fee for this information stated at the top of the form.

Q: Are my records provided to my parents?
A: Your medical records are confidential. Only you can request medical records to be viewed by yourself, or a medical facility for which you provide a medical release. Your parents do not have access to your medical record. SHS will not provide your parents any portion of your medical chart or verbal information confirming or denying your visit with us.

Q: Are medications provided to me?
A: Prescriptions are dispensed at the discretion of the health care provider. Medications are generally not provided by SHS. You will be responsible for filling a prescription at a local pharmacy. There is a pharmacy at the Physician Office Center (next to Ruby Hospital on the Medical Center campus), and a variety of private pharmacies throughout town. Close to the ERC are Kroger's and Rite Aid pharmacies. At this time the only student discount is at the Physicians Office Center (POC).

Q: What services are not provided by Student Health Service?
A: Dental Care, Optometry (vision testing for glasses/contact lenses), infirmary beds or inpatient services, diagnostic tests ordered by physicians outside the Student Health Service, ongoing physical therapy and orthopedic treatment, care for life or limb threatening emergencies and pharmacy are not provided by Student Health Service.

Q: Does Student Health Service perform HIV testing?
A: Yes the Orasure® test is available confidentially. Additionally, two free, anonymous and confidential test sites are available in the community: Monongalia County Health Department at 453 VanVoorhis Road (598-5100) and Health Right clinic at 341 Spruce Street (292-8234). All options require appointments for the test.

Q: Where can I obtain Sexually Transmitted Infection (STI) evaluation and treatment if I am not eligible to be seen at Student Health Service (for example in the summer while not enrolled in the current summer session)?
A: Monongalia County Health Department has a clinic on the first and third Thursday of the month between 12:30 and 3:00pm. Call 598-5119 to obtain an appointment. All County Health Departments in West Virginia have some clinics dedicated to STIs. In Fairmont, WV, located in Marion County, adjacent to Monongalia County, 20 minutes from Morgantown, there is a John Manchin Sr. Health Care Center which offers STI evaluations during appointment slots weekdays 8am – 5pm. The number to call is 363-2500.

Q: How do I go about acquiring a health form that needs a doctor’s signature for studying abroad?
A: This health form is required by the Study Abroad Program. It requires a complete physical examination. Your private physician, a health care provider at an urgent care clinic or at Student Health Service (SHS) can complete the health form. A physical appointment is made at SHS by calling the appointment desk at 293-2311 and costs $25.00. If you are traveling to a developing country you may need immunizations that can be done in a travel appointment. Check with your class instructor if a group travel visit has been arranged. If you need an individual travel appointment arrange it by calling 293-1379 or 293-6974.
