HIV Testing Available Now!
Confidential HIV testing began at SHS in the fall of 2005.
- Who?
All students, faculty, and staff who believe they are at risk for HIV are eligible to get tested at Student Health.
- What?
The test used at Student Health is called OraSure® HIV-1, an oral test using a swab placed in your mouth for two to five minutes. No blood is collected and no needles are used. OraSure® HIV-1 does not use saliva. Instead, it absorbs antibodies from the mucous membranes in the mouth.
- Where?
Student Health Service, Ground Floor, Health Sciences Center.
- When?
Testing is done by appointment only during the Fall and Spring Semesters. Appointments usually last 20-30 minutes. The patient returns in two weeks for the test result. No results are given over the phone. Additionally, two free, anonymous and confidential blood test sites are available in the community: Monongalia County Health Department at 453 VanVoorhis Road (598-5100) and Health Right clinic at 341 Spruce Street (292-8234).
- Why?
Contact with blood, semen, vaginal fluid, breast milk, and other body fluids containing blood may put you at risk for HIV. If you have had such contact, consider getting tested.
- How?
The receptionist (293-2311) can arrange an appointment for your HIV antibody test. If you are unsure whether testing is appropriate for you at this time, ask to speak confidentially with a nurse.
- Cost?
One $10.00 co-payment covers both your initial testing visit and your return visit to get results.
