Triage is a French word meaning to classify or sort. The nurses at Student Health prioritize the care for students. Triage is the practice of conducting a verbal interview to assess the students’ health status, offer recommendations for treatment, and make a referral. It requires skillful observation, sound clinical judgment, excellent verbal skills, cultural sensitivity, and human caring. Student Health Nurses are specifically trained to deal with medical problems of college students.
The goals of the Triage Nurses are to gain confidence, relieve anxiety, and obtain relevant medical information. This will ensure appropriate level of care, education or referral as needed.
The Student Health Service Triage Nurses may recommend self-care instructions to actively involve the students in their own health care. With the students’ help, the Triage Nurses can make accurate diagnoses and develop the most effective treatment plans. We empower the students to partner with us in directing the course of their care. Informed patients are healthier patients.
