These are statistics on WVU students who received medical, legal or psychological help following alleged non-consensual sexual activity. Some sexual assault victims choose to pursue criminal charges against their assailants, most students do not. This information simply reflects the services and resources accessed by WVU students.

Sexual Assault Prevention and Education Presentations and Programs

WELCOME TO THE PARTY. The center of this presentation is a realistic film that encourages discussion. Much of the educational material is related through the film and curriculum.

SEXUAL ASSAULT 101. General information on sexual assault. The focus is on laws, statistics, and myths surrounding sexual assault. Interactive exercises are used (depending upon the size of the group to foster discussion and talk about opinions relating to sexual assault.

JUST FOR WOMEN. This presentation is geared toward women who may want to go into greater depth about certain sexual assault topics. The focus includes laws, statistics, prevention, what to do in the aftermath of a sexual assault, hospital procedures, the criminal justice system, and process from being a victim to becoming a survivor. This program is frank and can be emotional.

JUST FOR MEN. This program is designed to address the specific concerns that men have about sexual assault. Topics include laws, statistics, discussion and dispelling of myths, growing up male, communication issues and high-risk behaviors.

OTHER TOPICS. Additional topics that can be the focus of a presentation or included in other presentations include:

  • Laws, facts, statistics, myths about sexual assault, the criminal justice system, the judicial process, University Policy on sexual assault (which can be found in The Mountie), communication skills, alcohol and drugs, including Rohypnol and other “date rape drugs” and how to interact with a sexual assault survivor.

  • Trainings can be provided for friends, counselors, professors, resident hall assistants, medical professionals, parents, administrators, police officers, and criminal justice professionals.

Additional Information:

The Sexual Assault Prevention and Education Office has a resource library devoted to sexual assault. Books, articles and videos are available for individual use.

The office, in conjunction with University Health Service and the Community Health Promotion Program, offers an academic class on peer health education. Students can earn credit while learning about sexual assault and other topics and then give presentations to other students on those topics.

The Office is continually looking for volunteers to assist in a variety of projects throughout the year. No experience is necessary. Call the Sexual Assault Prevention and Education Office for more information.
