WVU School of Dentistry Alumni Awards

DISTINGUISHED ALUMNUS AWARD

Outstanding service acceptable for this consideration will include the reputation and formal recognition attained by the individual within professional, political, and public groups.  Both dental and dental hygiene graduates of the School of Dentistry are eligible for this award.
Eligibility will usually require some history in at least two of the three areas listed below:
1.   Election or appointment to positions in state or national groups (requiring major responsibilities), honorary memberships in state or national groups, the American College of Dentistry, and/or the International College of Dentists.
2.   Recipient of awards for service and contributions to professional and public areas.
3.   Scholarly development and attainment by advanced and honorary degrees, advancement to senior ranks in academic appointments, multiple professional presentations of scientific merit, and/or multiple publications in professional journals.

Special requirements for recipient of award:
1.   Must be an active member of the Alumni Association currently.

Procedures for Nomination and Election:
1.   Criteria given above should be printed periodically in the Alumni Bulletin.
2.   Nominations should be delivered to the Secretary‑Treasurer.
3.   Nominations will be reviewed by the awards committee.
4.   Nominations will be returned by the committee to the Board of Governors with recommendations.
5.   Final approval for the award is made by the Board of Governors.

6.   The Secretary will confirm “special requirements” before completing arrangements.

ACHIEVEMENT AWARD

The WVU School of Dentistry Alumni Association Board of Governors has established the following policy concerning the award:

1. This is not an annual award.  Rather, it is given annual consideration by the Board.

2. The award is to be presented to an individual for service to the profession, the state, and the WVU School of Dentistry.  Other qualifications presented on behalf on nominees will, of course, be considered by the Board.

3. All nominations must be made in writing.
           
4. All final decisions regarding this award will be made by the Board of Governors of the Alumni Association.                           

ALUMNI ASSOCIATION INSTRUMENT AWARD

This award was instituted at the October 11, 1986 meeting of the Board.  This award is to be given to a first year DDS student after the end of the spring term and is to be used to help defray instrument cost.  This award is to be based on academic achievement and financial need.  The award selection committee is to be a faculty member appointed by the Alumni Association President, the Secretary‑Treasurer and the Medical Center financial aid officer.  The amount of the award is to be $500.00.

An award for a Dental Hygiene student was instituted at the February 2002 meeting of the Board. This award is presented to a sophomore dental hygiene student with a minimum GPA of 3.0 and documented financial need.  This student must have demonstrated competency and professionalism in clinical techniques during the second semester of his/her sophomore year.  This monetary award is intended to assist the recipient with the purchase of clinical instruments. The amount of the award is to be $250.00
