GENERAL ORAL HEALTH INFORMATION

Teaching young patients proper flossing and brushing techniques is fun and easy when you use colorful, plush Hand Puppets. Puppets feature oversized teeth and an articulating device that delivers a surprise spray of water. Each puppet is approximately 11" tall. Puppets available are:

Effective with children, our oversized full mouth models and large toothbrushes allows you to demonstrate proper brushing and flossing techniques. Several full mouth model shows the entire set of upper and lower teeth and gums and opens on a plastic hinge. Two of the molars are removable for demonstration purposes. Large toothbrush is ideal for demonstrating brushing techniques at chair side demonstrations or for a group in classroom situations.

We have a dental related magic kit that has proven to be very effective and entertaining when presented to school children. The magic kit includes everything a dental office or student needs to quickly captivate, relax and education children before, during or after an office visit. You’ll find the magic helps strengthen rapport between the child and the dental professional and delivers dental health messages in a memorable and positive way. Each magic trick is self-working so there is no skill required. After a few minutes of practice, you’ll be able to perform them with no trouble.

TOBACCO/SMOKELESS TOBACCO RELATED SUPPLIES

An effective model to show the results of smokeless tobacco usage is our Mr. Gross Mouth. This hinged model of the teeth, flexible tongue and oral cavity show the effects of smokeless tobacco. Hand painted model is mounted on a wooden base. One of our most popular products with teens.

Another effective model to show the results of smokeless tobacco usage is Mr. Dip Lip. This model of the mouth opens and closes from the back like a puppet and flesh-like lips retract to show effects of dipping on inner lips, gums and teeth.

There is a poster book available: Smokeless Tobacco: A Chemical Time Bomb that highlights the dangers of smokeless tobacco-including deadly mouth cancers, severe dental problems and dangerous cardiovascular conditions. It is very graphic.

Videos

We have numerous videos available for your use. The tobacco/smokeless videos are very informative and, in some cases, very graphic. We have found them to be very effective when presented to elementary and high school students.

MediaSharp: Analyzing Tobacco and Alcohol Messages: 7 minutes. Geared toward ages 11-15. It tells the real story of smoking and alcohol in tv, movies and advertisements. Middle/junior high, community events/school programs.

Tragic Choice: The Bob Leslie Story: 12 minutes. Video about a high school baseball coach, Bob Leslie, from California who started chewing at the age of 13. He quit chewing at the age of 27 but discovered he had oral cancer 5 months later. It also examines what effects oral cancer from spit tobacco has had not only on his family but also on his ballplayers. Very good video! Junior high/high school, community events/school programs.

Bill Tuttle: Glory Days/Gory Days: 8 minutes. Video details the story of Bill Tuttle and his battle against oral cancer caused by chewing spit tobacco. He chewed for 38 years and has had five operations to fight oral cancer. He lost his fight in 1999. Very good video!. Junior high/high school, community events/school programs.

Poisoning Our Children: The Perils of Secondhand Smoke: 12 minutes. This video shows parents, grandparents, educators and others the importance of not smoking around children. Very good and thought provoking. Adults, community events/school programs.

Smoking: Truth or Dare: 60 minutes. Interviews with famous people, interviews with teenagers who smoke and chew and interviews with people suffering from illnesses caused by smoking. Visits to a hospital, morgue, doctors office with teenagers to show what can happen if they continue to smoke. Very good video! Middle/junior high/high school, community events/school programs.

No Dip No Duh: 15 minutes. This video is a tobacco prevention program highlighting young people taking a stand against chewing & dipping tobacco. In it National High School Rodeo champions & Rodeo queens talk about the ugly side of this nasty habit. Interviews with baseball players & doctors. Very good video but somewhat graphic! Junior high/high school, community events/school programs. Not for small children.

A Conversation Between Friends: 7 minutes. This video is about a young girl talking to her friend who wants to start using spit tobacco. It has interviews with baseball players and shows the disgusting habit of using spit tobacco. Emphasis on baseball and little league. Good for junior high and little league groups.

An Innocent Addiction: The Gruen Von Behrens Story: 10 minutes. The story of Gruen, a spit tobacco survivor. Good for Junior high/high school, community events/school programs. Not for small children.

Smoking: The Toxic Truth: 20 minutes. In this tobacco prevention video, designed to discourage young people from beginning to smoke, students are shown some of the horrific medical consequences of smoking. There are interviews with teenagers who smoke and would like to stop but can’t. Very good video but somewhat graphic! Junior high/high school, community events/school programs. Not for small children.

In The Know: Tobacco, Alcohol & Marijuana: 23 minutes. Exciting graphics, expert testimony and four young narrators work together to educate views about the tremendous damage that tobacco, alcohol & marijuana do to users’ lives. Also points out that these are “gateway drugs,” dramatically increasing the odds that a user will go onto abuse cocaine or heroin. Good for Junior high/high school, community events/school programs

Sooper Puppy: The Puff of Smoke: 21 minutes. Having mistake Big John’s cigarette smokes for a fire, Baxter ruins the cigarette with water. When Baxter attempts to replace the pack for his friend, Grandpaw questions his actions and relates the story of a young puppy with a weakness for cookies. Baxter is taught an important lesson in the dangers of nicotine addiction. Good for grades K-3.

McGruff’s Kids Files: Tobacco: 16 minutes. McGruff the Crime Dog and his teenage friend Jason utilize interviews with health experts and smokers to help students discover some “burning issues” about tobacco use. The video covers tobacco’s addictive properties, the harmful chemicals it contains, and its role in causing illnesses such as cancer, emphysema and heart disease. Good for grades 4-8.

Donnie Dinosaur’s Tobacco Trouble: 12 minutes. While on a walk through the forest, Sandy leads Milo into a cave and pressures him to smoke a cigarette. Donnie discovers them and teaches an important lesson about tobacco use. Good for ages 5-10.

Dusty the Dragon and Dr. Margie Hogan Talk About Tobacco: 11 minutes. Elementary age children can help Dusty the Dragon make the right choice about smoking and smokeless tobacco, as nationally known pediatrician Dr. Margie Hogan puts tobacco on trial. Animated characters Handsome Heart and the Lungs help reveal the truth about Nicky Teen and his gang, The Pack. Good for ages 5-10.

What’s Really in Spit Tobacco?

This small, round brochure lists the chemicals, etc. that are in smokeless tobacco and also has graphic pictures of oral cancer victims. There are also statements from several famous baseball players about their experience with smokeless tobacco.

Spitting Into The Wind

This is an excellent brochure on the hazards of using smokeless tobacco. It explains how you can check for the early warning signs of oral cancer and also shows examples of cancerous mouths.

Sean Marsee’s Smokeless Death

This brochure from Reader’s Digest details the life of high school athlete, Sean Marsee who had been using smokeless tobacco since he was 12 years old. When he was 18, he discovered he had developed oral cancer. The brochure tells of his numerous operations on his head and neck area. This is an excellent brochure for high school students. Sean died in 1984 at the age of 19.

My War With a Smoke-Free Killer

This is the story of Bill Tuttle, a Major League baseball player who started using smokeless tobacco in 1955. The brochures chronicles the life of Bill Tuttle and his discovery that he had oral cancer and his subsequent treatments. Mr. Tuttle died in 1999 of oral cancer.

This is an excellent brochure on the hazards of using smokeless tobacco. It explains how you can check for the early warning signs of oral cancer and also shows examples of cancerous mouths.

Through with Chew: Ten Myths About Smokeless Tobacco

This is a newspaper insert that has been distributed state-wide to schools, health centers and other concerned organizations during the Through with Chew Smokeless Tobacco Campaign. It list the myths about smokeless tobacco. Example: Smokeless Tobacco is a harmless Alternative to Smoking. Not True! Smokeless tobacco is a deadly killer in its own right. This newspaper insert shows the early warning signs to look for and also has graphic pictures of several victims of smokeless tobacco, including Sean Marsee. This is an excellent teaching tool for elementary and high school students. The insert can be gotten in bulk from the West Virginia Tobacco Control Coalition. Their address is listed in the ordering information section.

Save Your Face: Smokeless Doesn’t Mean Harmless

This is also a newspaper insert that has been distributed state-wide to schools, health center and other concerned organizations during the Through with Chew Smokeless Tobacco Campaign. There are interviews with several famous baseball players; tips on how to quit smokeless tobacco use; warning signs for oral cancer and a description of some of the poisons that are in smokeless tobacco. This is an excellent teaching tool for elementary and high school students. The insert can be gotten in bulk from The West Virginia Library Commission. Their phone number is listed on the back.

Enough Snuff: A Guide for Quitting Smokeless Tobacco

This self-help guide is designed to help you quit using snuff or chewing tobacco. The most important factor is the desire and motivation to quit. This is an excellent booklet.

Clearing the Air: How to Quit Smoking and Quit for Keeps

This book guides you from thinking about stopping smoking through actually doing it - from the day you quit to quitting for keeps.

We also have brochures on tobacco in general and the hazards of usage. These are too numerous to list separately but are available for distribution.
