Academic Appointments: In addition to his appointment in the Department of Dental Practice & Rural Health, Dr. McNeil has a primary appointment in the Department of Psychology, where he is an Associate Professor with tenure. He also has faculty appointments in the Department of Anesthesiology, and the Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry.

Teaching Responsibilities: Dr. McNeil contributes dental behavioral science lectures to a number of courses across the curriculum for dentistry and dental hygiene, including dental practice & rural health, oral surgery, periodontics, and prosthodontics, among others. He provides continuing professional education for dentists and psychologists. Dr. McNeil is a member of the Graduate Faculty and chairs and serves on committees for dentistry "table clinics", as well as theses and dissertations.

Service/Clinical Activities: Dr. McNeil directs the Anxiety, Psychophysiology, and Pain Research Laboratory in the Department of Psychology, where basic research is conducted on anxiety, fear, and pain. Dental faculty and students are involved in this research. Dr. McNeil has a part-time clinical practice and is a supervising psychologist in the Department of Psychology's clinic, the Quin Curtis Center for Psychological Service, Training and Research.

Research Interests: Behavioral Dentistry (including psychological assessment and treatment of dental fear and phobia, adherence and appointment attendance, pain management, and training of dental students), pain, anxiety, fear, panic, phobia, as well as fear and anxiety in special groups, including Appalachian and other rural individuals, as well as Native Americans. Dr. McNeil includes faculty and students from the School of Dentistry in applied behavioral science investigations, and collaborates with them on basic dental science research projects.
