The Department of Emergency Medicine at West Virginia University (WVU) School of Medicine is dedicated to furthering mid-level provider training and education. Our faculty members have taught Emergency Medicine to postgraduate Physician Assistants for over 14 years. We are a department with firm ties to ACEP, and have faculty members who have served as the ACEP Liaison to AAPA.

With the ever-growing need to expand the workforce of Emergency Medicine practitioners, we are now proud to offer our new Emergency Medicine Certificate Program (EMCP).

If you are a physician assistant or nurse practitioner, or a physician (MD/DO) who was not residency-trained in Emergency Medicine, EMCP is here at WVU, and is designed especially for you. We are planning to launch the program in August 2008.

The Program

EMCP is designed with the goal of expanding your knowledge of emergency medicine while at the same time maintaining a degree of flexibility for you to learn at your own pace. You may choose one of three different pathways

• Certificate Track: The entire EMCP certificate can be completed over a 2 year (4 university semesters) time frame. In order to receive the certificate of completion, students must enroll in the EMCP509 course. This is a one credit "capstone" course in which important concepts in emergency medicine are integrated and evidence-based emergency Medicine Concepts are introduced. The procedures course will be offered on an annual basis starting in the 2009-2010 academic year.


• A-la-carte: Choose individual courses in order to supplement your knowledge in a particular topic in emergency medicine.Once you complete this course you can decide if you would like to enroll in more courses to work toward getting a certificate of completion.


• Procedures Course. We will be offering a procedures course (EMCP510) on an annual basis. This course may be taken, like our other courses, by itself or as part of the Certificate Track. We believe that the best way to learn how to do procedures is by actually seeing how they are done in person, and then doing them yourself! As such, travel to the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center at West Virginia University School of Medicine in Morgantown, WV is strongly encouraged, although not mandatory. Those who do travel to Morgantown for this part of the procedures course will receive an extra credit, as well as a special letter of completion. The procedures course will be offered on an annual basis starting in the 2009-2010 academic year.

All course material will be delivered electronically over the internet via SOLE (Secure On-line Environment). This means that you can enroll in our program regardless of were you live.

Our courses will be offered over a two year cycle, therefore you may enroll in EMCP at any time. For example, if you choose to enroll in the Spring 2009 semester you will start with EMCP 503 and 504, and then continue on with the program and complete EMCP 501 and 502 when they are offered again in the Fall 2010 semester.

Completion of our proposed program will result in a "Certificate of Specialty Training in Emergency Medicine."

Tuition

The Department of Emergency Medicine is proud to announce that EMCP is now a part of the Southern Regional Education Board's Electronic Campus (www.electroniccampus.org). This allows us to offer ANY STUDENT, ANYWHERE tuition and fees at IN-STATE RATES. At present, each credit hour is approximately $500; one semester (if enrolled in both available courses) is roughly $2000. The Department also encourages interested students to talk to their employers about potential tuition reimbursements. Many organizations offer this type of program, and others may be willing to consider it.
