This laboratory contains three major sections: hematology, coagulation, and body fluid analysis. The hematology section is mostly involved with the cells found in blood and in the diagnosis of diseases, which affect those cells. The basic blood count, white blood cell differential and platelet count are offered, along with more specialized tests and stains which can be helpful in the diagnosis of anemia, leukemia, and other white blood cell and platelet diseases.
The coagulation section offers the basic testing such as the Prothrombin Time and Activated Partial Thromboplastin Time, as well as more specialized testing for coagulation inhibitors, coagulation factor deficiencies, and functional platelet defects. Consultations with the medical director of the hematology laboratory are available for difficult diagnostic cases.
The body fluid section covers urinalysis and examination of other body fluids. Several chemical tests of urine are available in this laboratory. In addition, the formed elements of urine and other body fluids can be examined. Body fluids can come from any space or potential space in the body, but most commonly involve urine, semen, CSF, pleural fluid, peritoneal fluid, synovial fluid, and pericardial fluid.
Although certain tests (e.g. blood count, PT) are available 24 hours a day, other test are available only during regular week day working hours and other tests are only available with prior scheduling with the hematology laboratory. Please refer to the alphabetical listing of laboratory testing to determine if scheduling is required. Some specimens degrade with time and cannot even be collected during off-hours.
