The Transfusion Service/Blood Bank provides blood components for comprehensive transfusion support for the patients within the confines of Ruby Memorial Hospital. Blood Donor Services are coordinated through the American Red Cross, Greater Alleghenies Region, Johnstown, PA and its sub-center in Morgantown. The service routinely provides whole blood, packed red cells, washed red cells, deglycerolized red cells, fresh frozen plasma, cryoprecipitate, platelets, clotting factor concentrates and Rh immune globulin. Clinical criteria for transfusion of blood components and products are reviewed, monitored and audited by the Blood Bank staff and the Transfusion Committee and are available on Ruby On-line. For specific indications, special components and services are available upon consultation with the Blood Bank director or pathologist on-call. These include irradiated blood components, CMV negative blood components, platelet pheresis, HLA typed or matched platelet components, pediatric aliquots, therapeutic phlebotomy, therapeutic white cell, platelet, plasma exchange and transfusion reaction evaluation. These require advanced notice and can be obtained through consultation with the Blood Bank director and/or technical specialist. Requests should be received as early as possible to assure availability.
The Red Cross provides a predeposit autologous blood donation program and a directed donation program.
Blood Bank specimens must be labeled at the patient’s bedside with the patient’s name and hospital number. The specimen must be checked against the patient’s ID band and be signed or initialed by the responsible phlebotomist.
Blood products can be picked up by any authorized person at the third floor Blood Bank window. They must sign and date the Blood Product Receipt Log validating recipient and unit formation. This Log must clearly identify the patient with full name, hospital number, the patient’s location, the blood products and the quantity dispensed.
