Required Competencies

Practice Based Learning

Demonstrate an ability to critically assess the scientific literature related to transfusion medicine.
Demonstrate knowledge of evidence-based medicine and apply its principles in practice of transfusion medicine.
Use multiple sources of information, electronic and otherwise, to develop skills for lifelong learning.
Develop personally effective strategies for identifying and remediating gaps in medical knowledge.
Use laboratory problems and clinical inquiries to identify process improvements to increase patient safety.
Demonstrate knowledge of how to establish continuing competency assessment for pathologists as well as for laboratory personnel.
Use proficiency programs to improve laboratory practices.
Demonstrate the ability to develop new policies and procedures or change existing policies and procedures based on a review of the literature or issuance of new guidelines by regulatory agencies.
Senior residents (PGY3-4), actively participate in monthly Clinical Pathology Quality Assurance Committee meetings, learning how to identify and report on a variety of QA monitors (case turnaround time, mislabeled/unlabeled specimens, clotted specimens, etc.).
Utilize computer based literature searches to find relevant scientific references to aid in the workup of blood bank/transfusion medicine problems.
Discuss study designs and statistical methods to the appraisal of clinical studies and other information on diagnostic and therapeutic effectiveness (PGY3-4).
Access patient clinical information and previous pathology accessions via the Hospital Information System (Merlin).
Perform computer searches of the medical literature (PubMed, Google Scholar, etc.). Access web-sites pertaining to blood banking/transfusion medicine.
Senior residents actively participate in the teaching of medical students and other health care professionals employed in the clinical pathology section including medical students and medical technologists.
