Required Compentencies:
Systems Based Practice
Residents must demonstrate an awareness and responsiveness to the larger context of the system of health care and the ability to call on system resources to provide pathology services that are of optimal value.
Residents are expected to comprehend how their own surgical pathology diagnoses affect health care decisions for patients and the health care system (PGY2-4).
Discuss how the various types of medical practice and delivery systems differ from one another, including methods of controlling health care costs and allocating resources (PGY2-4).
Practice cost-effective health care and resource allocation that does not compromise quality of care, while understanding the need for and cost of special stains, immunohistochemistry and other adjunct techniques (PGY3-4).
Senior residents attend QA committee meetings to discuss how to partner with the administrative and technical staff to assess, coordinate, and improve health care and know how these activities affect system performance (PGY4).
Residents may also inspect the section of anatomic pathology during a CAP inspection of an outside institution (PGY2-4).
