1987 Recipient - Mitchell M. Benedict, MD (Class of 1923)

Mitchell M. BenedictDr. Benedict was named the WVU School of Medicine Distinguished Alumnus for 1987.
Dr. Benedict graduated from the WVU School of Medicine in 1923 with a BS degree.

He received his MD at NYU and Bellevue Hospital Medical College. He served his internship at St. Johns Riverside Hospital for two years.

Dr. Benedict went into general practice in Yonkers, New York, from 1929 to 1939. During that time, he served in the Veterans Administration Facilities.

From 1939 to 1942, he had a private practice in Westchester County, New York.

From 1942 to 1955, Dr. Benedict served in the Army with the US Signal Corps Research and Development Laboratories at Fort Monmouth, New Jersey.

He retired in 1955.

Dr. Benedict has made a significant contribution to the School of Medicine by establishing a research professorship in industrial medicine and community health in 1984.

One of his favorite mottos: "We are happier with what we have when it is shared with those we love."
