- Margaret A. Kessinger, MD
(Class of 1967)
Dr. Margaret "Anne" Kessinger is a pioneer in the clinical application of Peripheral Blood Cell Transplantation. She established the first Blood Stem Cell Transplant program in the United States. Her work has done much to establish the rationale and effectiveness of this therapy.
Dr. Kessinger is professor of medicine at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and chief of the Center's oncology/hematology section. She was the first oncology fellow at the University of Nebraska Hospital to be awarded a clinical cancer training grant from the U.S. Public Health Service. Dr. Kessinger credits her success in medicine in part to a good hematology background from WVU.
Dr. Kessinger was born in Beckley, West Virginia, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. C. T. Kessinger. She received her undergraduate degree from WVU in 1963 and medical degree in 1967. She completed her internship and residency in internal medicine, and a fellowship in clinical oncology at the University of Nebraska Hospital.
Dr. Kessinger has published articles in medical journals in the United States and overseas, and has spoken at numerous medical meetings, including ones in Europe, Asia and Australia, about her peripheral blood stem cell research. In February, 1995, she was the guest speaker at Carnegie Hall when The Long Island College Hospital inaugurated the Othmer Cancer Center's Cell Transplantation Program.
The West Virginia University School of Medicine is honored to recognize the outstanding accomplishments of Dr. Margaret Anne Kessinger and present to her the Distinguished Alumnus Award for 1998.
