1995 Recipient - Larry K. Pickering (Class of 1970)

Larry K. PickeringLarry K. Pickering, MD, "Distinguished Alumnus" for 1995, was chosen by his peers for his outstanding accomplishments in medical research relative to pediatric patient care. He received is MD degree from the School of Medicine in 1970, and his BS degree from WVU in 1966.
Dr. Pickering is professor and vice chairman for research, Department of Pediatrics, Eastern Virginia Medical School in Norfolk, Virginia, where he is also director of the Center Pediatric Research. He has lectured and published extensively on numerous areas of pediatrics, with particular emphasis on immunizations and control of infectious diarrhea in day care center settings. While as a medical student at WVU, Dr. Pickering’s interest in research was nurtured by faculty members, especially his mentor, Dr. Gwendolyn Hogan, Neurology and Pediatrics.

His post graduate training included internship and residency in pediatrics and a fellowship in pediatric infectious diseases at St. Louis Children’s Hospital, Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, Missouri.

Born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and raised in the Wheeling area, Dr. Pickering still has family, including his mother, living in West Virginia. He is married to Margaret J. Thompson, also a WVU grad, and has two children, Andrew and Margaret. He returned to WVU in 1994 as the featured speaker at Pediatric Oktoberfest sponsored by the Department of Pediatrics.

Dr. Pickering is a nationally recognized medical researcher, author and lecturer, an avid supporter of the WVU School of Medicine and a loyal Mountaineer.
