1990 Recipient - Isaiah A. Wiles, MD (Class of 1933)

Isaiah A. WilesDr. Wiles lives in Morgantown in the summer and Port Charlotte, Florida, in the winter.
He was named the WVU School of Medicine Distinguished Alumnus for 1990.

Following completion of two years at WVU , he received his MD degree from Rush Medical College in 1936.

He interned at Chicago’s Presbyterian Hospital and went into private practice while being an instructor at Rush until 1939.

His military career began with service in the West Virginia and Illinois National Guards. He began combat duty as a base surgeon in New Guinea.

Dr. Wiles entered the Armed Forces Staff College where his studies centered around possible Middle East problems. During the Vietnam War, he was head of the medical services at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, one of the busiest training centers.

He is past president of Phi Beta Kappa at WVU; past president of the International Health Society; Fellow in the Royal Society of Health in London; member of the American College of Health Care Executives; associate member of Military Surgeons; member of national, state and county medical associations; and a Fellow in the American Public Health Association.

His military honors include twice receiving the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star and a Purple Heart.

Dr. Wiles retired as a US Army Colonel.

He is a former Monongalia County Health Director.
