Alumni Weekend
2007 Weekend Recap
October 19 – 20
You just had to be there! From opening registration, till the final car was packed to leave Ramada Inn in Morgantown, it was a wonderful weekend! Outstanding fall foliage and a resounding Saturday afternoon win over Mississippi State put a little icing on the cake for everyone.
Registration for the 38th School of Medicine Alumni Weekend began at 1:00 on Friday afternoon for more than 300 alumni, guests, faculty and students. The first event was a bus tour to the Health Sciences Center for 26 alumni and guests. Highlights of the tour were shopping in the Ruby Gift Shop, seeing the Pylons in their new home and attending the dedication of Cavanaugh’s, the Coffee Shop in the new Learning Center. This tour was open to anyone and initiated by members of the class of 1962.
Alumni were invited to attend the dedication ceremony for Cavanaugh’s in the new Learning Center at the Health Sciences Center on Friday, 3:30 – 5:00 p.m. This new Coffee Shop was named in honor of the memory of Mrs. Elsie Cavanaugh, who owned and operated a cafeteria on the ground floor of the Basic Sciences Building from 1958 through 1973 where she encouraged cash-strapped students to get their meals with the simple promise of paying her back when they could. Several Health Sciences alumni, faculty and students, as well as 40 Cavanaugh family members and friends, attended the ceremony.
Friday evening activities began with a reception at Ramada at 6:00 followed by the Alumni Banquet featuring the presentation of the Distinguished Alumnus Award to Raymond F. Morgan, class of 1976, and class reunions. Classes celebrating reunions were 1962, ’67, ’72, ’77, ’82, ’87, ’92, ’97 and 2002, and graduates of the Two-year School, 1948 – 1958. Members of the Cavanaugh family attended the Banquet and each person attending the dinner received a “Cavanaugh” coffee cup.
Saturday morning began at 7:30 a.m. with the annual business meeting. Members approved actions taken by Council at their annual meeting on October 5 at Stonewall Jackson Resort in Roanoke, WV.
The Pat A. Tuckwiller Scientific Seminar (part of the Hal Wanger Family Medicine conference) was held from 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. with the following presentations: Plastic Surgery, Raymond F. Morgan and ALS: What is New since Lu Gehrig, Laurie Gutmann.
Two bus-loads of Mountaineer fans left Ramada at 1:30 p.m. to attend the Mississippi State vs. WVU football game. Kick-off was scheduled for noon, but changed to 3:30 to accommodate TV schedules. Final score was a victory for the home team - WVU 38, Mississippi State 13.
Saturday evening was free time for class reunions to get together on their own, except for graduates of the Two-year School. Reunion Dinner for them was scheduled to begin at Ramada at 6:30 p.m. Due to the change in time for the football game, dinner began when the buses got back to Ramada at approximately 8:30 pm. There were 55 alumni, guests and Alumni staff in attendance. Dean John Prescott and his wife, Dr. Charlotte Dillis, were special guests and spoke to the graduates. The evening concluded with a sharing of memories by graduates.
On Sunday morning, the Alumni Office staff joined Weekend participants for breakfast in the hotel restaurant as they before they began their journeys home
