Welcome and Mission Statement
Welcome to the Department of Anesthesiology at West Virginia University. Our department is composed of thirty anesthesiologists, eighteen anesthesia residents, twenty nurse anesthetists, and support personnel including anesthesia technicians and administrative support people. We work together to accomplish our mission of providing:
- Educational opportunities for medical students, residents, student nurse anesthetists and other healthcare providers
- Service to the people of West Virginia and surrounding states
- Research opportunities to advance our specialty in order to provide better care for our patients

The Department of Anesthesiology is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and is proud to be part of the West Virginia University School of Medicine which is fully accredited by the Licensing Commission for Medical Education (LCME).
The School of Medicine sponsors 42 graduate medical education programs including our own. Founded in 1964, our residency has trained many anesthesiologists who not only serve the people of the State of West Virginia but also hold academic and private practice positions throughout the country.
Our main teaching hospital is Ruby Memorial, a member of the West Virginia Health System. Most of our educational endeavors take place in this hospital which is a tertiary referral center for the State of West Virginia and the region. We also utilize a local community hospital (Monongalia General Hospital) for some additional experiences.
We invite you to visit the various informational areas on our web page to learn more about us.
