Department of Anesthesiology
Residency Program Director's Message
The anesthesiology residency at West Virginia University has a proud history of educating and training very competent anesthesiologists for the state and region. We are currently on probation for being out of compliance with the guidelines of the Anesthesia RRC, but are currently in total compliance and waiting on the RRC to make another site visit and clear our name.
Our program is relatively small which allows to devote more attention to the needs of individual residents. Since all of our training easily takes place within one institution, we use the flexibility to improve resident performances on cases in which they find the most difficulty so they can achieve proficiency. We pick the cases that will benefit the residents the most, equipping them with the skills they will need for the most challenging cases. We are blessed with many resources including electronic anesthesia records, advanced monitoring, and advanced ancillary equipment.
In the last year of training, residents not only have a concentration of difficult cases, but they get an experiential training in the business aspects anesthesiology. These include areas such as billing, contracting, negotiation, budgeting, benefits management, hiring and firing employees, operating room management, investment planning, retirement planning, supervision and teaching.
We have a very exciting program and wish for you or your friends to look closer at us for your training or personnel needs. Our graduates have an excellent reputation and are in high demand.
