Department of Anesthesiology
Residency Program
The center of an academic anesthesiology department is its residency program. We work hard to make ours the best. As the only anesthesiology residency in the state of West Virginia, we have an important and visible role in the state, and in its lead university. The state expects excellence. We have achieved this by attracting talented faculty, creating a productive culture, and focusing on our educational programs and residency.
Our philosophy is to progressively innovate, adopt new technology, seek excellence, and recognize that clinical service, education, and the pursuit of new knowledge are linked. Our department culture is one of trust, and cooperative productivity. Visitors in the department frequently remark that everyone seems so upbeat and involved, and that clinical care is efficient and state-of-the-art. We take pride in our style and achievements.
Our faculty have diverse backgrounds, serve on numerous national committees, and encompass all subspecialties of anesthesiology. Particularly strong at WVU are our programs in pediatric, cardiac, and neurological anesthesia, and pain management. In our operating rooms, we have used an automated anesthesia record-keeper for more than a decade, and the institution has added numerous information systems to the department making us very wired. Our ambulatory surgery center is very active, as are several out-of-the-OR anesthetizing sites. WVU has residencies in all recognized surgical specialties, with whom we occasionally hold joint conferences. We have an advanced anesthesia simulation center.
Morgantown is a great place to live and work. Morgantown is a college town. The cultural, educational, and sports activities of the university give the city diversity and excitement. Demographics Daily has ranked Morgantown "best small city in America," based on a statistical analysis of 20 quality of life indicators. The nearby mountains, white-water rivers, and interstate highways are further attractions. In his signature song Country Roads, John Denver sang "Almost heaven, West Virginia". We understand this feeling, and want others to experience it.
