The WVU School of Medicine, Morgantown Division, embarked on a strategic planning process in the spring of 2005. The planning process included leadership from the School of Medicine, our Visiting Committee, our teaching hospital, West Virginia University Hospitals (WVU Hospitals), as well as our physician practice plan, University Health Associates (UHA).
Below are the three strategic priorities that were developed for during our planning process:
Priority #1 - Strengthen our State and National Reputation
To become known state-wide and nationally as a high caliber institution, the WVU School of Medicine must market our successes both internally and externally.
- Achieve Top 25 School of Medicine and Top 100 hospital designation
- Seize opportunities that improve the health of the state
Priority #2 - Institutionalize an Achievement Culture
In order for us to achieve our stated vision, we must move from a “We think we can” to “We know we can” organizational culture.
- Recruit and retain faculty, staff, residents, and students with strong credentials
- Develop strong and effective leaders
- Create strong academic/clinical/research departments and centers
- Promote a customer service culture
- Provide high-quality comprehensive healthcare
- Leverage technology for advancement in education, research, and patient care
- Create a strong financial position for the School of Medicine
Priority #3 - Expand and Promote Multi-Disciplinary Collaborations
The WVU School of Medicine must operate as a single organization and not in our traditional silos.
- Pursue joint program development and strategic planning
- Enhance research efforts within the School of Medicine
The three strategic priorities for the School of Medicine Strategic Plan were developed to directly support the five main goals outlined in the West Virginia University 2010 Plan which include:
- Attract and graduate high quality students
- Recruit and retain high-quality faculty committed to the land-grant mission
- Enhance the educational environment for student learning
- Promote discovery and exchange of knowledge and ideas
- Improve West Virginia’s health, economy and quality of life
Although we anticipate that elements of our plan will change, our vision of becoming a Top 25 School of Medicine will remain constant. For more details with regard to our strategic plan, including a list of goals, objectives and indicators, please visit the following url:
