  • This year, 54 percent of WVU M.D. graduates have elected to enter primary care residency programs.

  • WVU School of Medicine accepted 12 applicants through the early decision program into the class of 2011 (twice the normal rate) with a guarantee of $5,000 per year of scholarship support for the M.D. degree.

  • The WVU School of Medicine was one of nine U.S. medical schools that expanded first-year enrollment by 10 percent or more.

  • This year, 41 of the 105 medical school graduates will train at West Virginia hospitals, with many remaining at WVU-related health care facilities.

  • Ralph Utzman, PT, MPH, Associate Professor, Division of Physical Therapy, received the Judith C. Kandzari Award for serving as an outstanding faculty member participating in the Rural Health Education Partnership program.

  • Bei Wu, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Community Medicine, has been selected as a 2006/07 Fellow of the Association for Gerontology in Higher Education. Dr. Wu is one of eight professionals who have exhibited outstanding leadership in gerontology/geriatrics education across the nation.

  • WVU has the largest number of ACGME accredited residency programs in the state with 42.

  • WVU offers the only online summer remediation courses in pathology and pharmacology in the nation.

  • Ann Cronin, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Division of Occupational Therapy, was designated as a fellow (FAOTA) in the American Occupational Therapy Association.

  • WVU M.D. program acceptance rate is 5.2 percent.

  • This year, 26 students from the class of 2007 participated in the International Health Program. These students traveled to Guatemala, Peru, Uganda, Costa Rica, Italy, and the Gambia.

  • The first group of MEDSTEP students will be entering medical school this fall as part of the class of 2011. This program, in conjunction with Shepherd University and the WVU School of Medicine’s Eastern Division, grants early acceptance into the WVU School of Medicine; to select students, provided they met and maintain various criteria.

  • Eastern Division implemented their first clinical simulation model, “SimMan” in September of 2006.

  • WVU’s tropical medicine course is one of only nine courses offered in the United States that is accredited by the American Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene.

  • WVU School of Medicine has the only “Dean on Call” program in the nation.

  • The Division of Physical Therapy now offers a transitional doctoral program for practicing clinicians with an entry level master’s degree.

  • Nationally, fewer than eight percent of U.S. M.D. graduates matched to family medicine residency programs this year. At WVU, we more than doubled that at 18 percent.

  • The School established a new two-year thesis track in the masters degree program in Exercise Physiology.

  • Professional Programs has developed a 24-month master’s degree program in Pathologist’s Assistants. Classes will start in the spring of 2008 and will enroll 10 students.

  • WVU School of Medicine’s Curriculum Committee approved a Public Health track that will be integrated into the M.D. curriculum. Students accepted in the Public Health track must remain in good academic and professional standing within the M.D. degree curriculum.
