Message from the Dean
If I was asked to describe the single most notable moment of this academic year, I would have to state it was when Dr. Darrell Kirch, President of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) awarded the AAMC’s Outstanding Community Service Award to the WVU School of Medicine. At a resplendent dinner, in front of colleagues and representatives of our nation’s 125 medical schools, WVU wasn’t in the middle of the pack, nor was it simply in the top quartile. Rather it was recognized as the number one medical school in the nation for its innovative programs and ongoing commitment to its community – West Virginia.
Our unwavering dedication to our four missions of community service, education, patient care, and research speaks volumes about our faculty, staff, and students. From our three campuses, the WVU School of Medicine touches the lives of hundreds of thousands of West Virginians each year. There is no doubt that the health of West Virginia is inextricably tied to the WVU School of Medicine.
Last year’s inaugural annual report, Tradition of Excellence, was well received by our alumni, friends, and legislators. In a similar format, West Virginia is Our Community highlights significant moments in the 2006-07 academic year. I hope that as you read these pages you will feel a strong sense of pride in your medical school; the WVU School of Medicine, and the example it provides to the rest of the nation.
