The WVU Specialty Clinic opened at the Larry Joe Harless Community Center, Gilbert, West Virginia, in February of 2007 under the direction of John Brick, M.D., Professor & Chair, Department of Neurology.
and James Brick, M.D., Professor & Chair, Department of Medicine. As brothers, Drs. John and Jim Brick grew up in Dunbar, West Virginia. In their careers, they have always made providing health care services to all citizens of West Virginia a priority.
The WVU Department of Behavioral Medicine & Psychiatry established a program called the “Grassroots Grants” which provides financial support for community projects relating to mental health, mental illness, substance abuse and dependence, adolescence and teenagers, family preservation, just to name a few.

In November of 2006, the show “Doctors on Call,” which is produced by WVU and West Virginia Public Broadcasting, celebrated its 500th episode. For over 500 episodes “Doctors on Call” has brought health care issues and advice to the viewers of West Virginia, by presenting topics that are relevant to West Virginians.

Rashida A. Khakoo, M.D., Professor & Chief, Section of Infectious Diseases, Department of Medicine, received the "Living the Dream Sharing of Self Award" from The Martin Luther King Jr. West Virginia Holiday Commission, West Virginia Division of Culture and History for her substantial contributions to helping the community and education.

Robert Stitzel, Ph.D., Professor & Associate Chair, Department of Biochemistry, was named recipient of WVU's 2007 Martin Luther King Achievement Award for his work in health advocacy for West Virginians.

Health Sciences and Technology Academy (HSTA) provides intensive academic enrichment which emphasizes science and math for students from 9th through 12th grade. Since the program's inception in 1994 it has assisted over 700 students attend or graduate from a professional school or college. In 2007, HSTA received a National Institutes of Health grant for $1.3 million over the next five years to continue programmatic development. Since HSTA's inception they have received a total of $8,897,361 in grant support.
