Strategic Planning
Vision: The WVU School of Medicine will be nationally recognized as a leader among academic health care organizations by cultivating a tradition of excellence and innovation in education, patient care, research, and service to the state.

In the spring of 2006, the WVU School of Medicine released its 2006-2010 strategic plan. This working document serves as a compass for our organization to ensure we are all moving in the same direction.

The three priorities outlined in this plan include:

  • Strengthen our State and National Reputation
  • Institutionalize an Achievement Culture
  • Expand and Promote Multi-Disciplinary Collaborations

Since we operate in a dynamic industry it is critical that our plan remains flexible. Therefore, on an annual basis goals and indicators are established in support of our strategic priorities.

Although our progress may seem slow to some, we have achieved major goals this year that directly support our strategic plan. Many of these accomplishments are highlighted in the mission sections of this annual report.

You can view the entire strategic plan at: www.hsc.wvu.edu/som/strategicPlan/

For the upcoming academic year, specific goals have also been established. Three major goals for this upcoming year include:

  • Review and modify our strategic research plan.

Our strategic research plan was written over four years ago and focused primarily on bench research. This coming academic year this plan will be reviewed and modified to include population health, clinical, and translational research.

  • Develop and implement a financial data repository and budget application.

Financial reporting and our budgeting process are very cumbersome. Because of our various sources of revenue, financial data is housed in numerous systems. This year, the Dean’s Office will implement a financial data repository that will address our reporting and budgeting issues.

  • Implement Wave 1 - Epic Systems Corporation applications on-time and within budget.

The first wave of Epic Systems Corporation applications, internally named Merlin, are scheduled to go-live in the spring of 2008. Wave 1 applications include: billing, registration, scheduling, health information management, radiology, part of emergency medicine, and results reporting.Strategic Planning
