May 24 -
June 15, 2006
“You can shape your future if you take charge of it day by day,” Dean John Prescott told graduates of the WVU School of Medicine at the Investiture Ceremony on Saturday, May 13. Prescott also warned them of second-guessers who might challenge their scientific and medical decisions. He said, “Make your life your own. Choose to influence events and not have them influence you.” Prescott addressed 91 graduating physicians and 9 graduating biomedical scientists of the class of 2006. Hundreds of family, friends and faculty witnessed as the physicians took the Oath of Hippocrates, and PhD candidates the Affirmation of Scientists. More Info >

Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) 2006

Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) 2006
May 5 - 23, 2006
The Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) has been used by medical schools and residency programs since 1975.  It is a means of assessing clinical competency, based on objective testing through direct observation.  The OSCE was first described by Hardin in 1975 and is comprised of “stations” in which examinees are expected to perform a variety of clinical tasks within a specified time frame.   As part of the evaluation process in the Physical Diagnosis and Clinical Integration course at West Virginia University School of Medicine, all second year medical students participate in an OSCE at the end of the spring semester.
