Commonly referred to as C8, ammonium perfluorooctanoate and its derivative salts are used by the E. I. du Pont de Nemours (DuPont) chemical company to aid in the production of nonstick and protective fluoropolymers such as TEFLON™, Scotchgard™, and Gore-Tex™. The DuPont manufacturing facility is located near Parkersburg, West Virginia. Beginning in the 1950s, air emissions from the manufacturing process and leaks or waste have gradually found their way into drinking water sources in six water districts of nearby communities in Ohio and West Virginia...
