Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry

Chair

I am pleased you have expressed an interest in the Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry at the West Virginia University School of Medicine. Our goal is to offer a broad educational experience with a balanced program of biological psychiatry and psychodynamic principles in pursuit of clinical excellence, community service, and research.

We recognize that psychiatry must interface primary care with the presence of managed care. Our residents are trained to practice within the general framework of the primary care medical model. We prepare residents for private practice, for work in the public sector, the managed care setting, or for an academic career. We offer in addition to the general psychiatry program, combined training programs in internal medicine, neurology, or family medicine.

The resident's primary training takes place at Chestnut Ridge Hospital, which opened in 1987 on the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center campus. Our faculty is young and energetic with diverse talents. They are dedicated to the mission of teaching and clinical excellence.

Come visit us to meet our faculty and residents and to gain full appreciation of our offerings.

Sincerely,

James M. Stevenson, MD
Chair
