Course Description
The 19th Annual West Virginia Addiction Training Institute (ATI) features current issues within the physical, emotional, social, and spiritual areas of addictive behavior. Special topics for 2008 include gender differences, trauma, families in treatment, relapse prevention, neurobiology of addiction, and ethics. This course is designed for those experienced in the field of addiction, and for those new to the addiction field or those seeking a thorough review of fundamental information and approaches with the substance abusing population. The training is valuable for those working or planning to work in the areas of mental health, addictions counseling, courts and corrections, school counseling, nursing and psychology.

The two-hour session on “Addiction Updates” will be offered Monday evening from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm beginning with dinner at 5:30 pm. CME will be offered.

Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry, the ATI provides 35 hours of continuing education credit for full week attendance

Course Objectives
The goals of the ATI are to examine various aspects of addictive behavior to provide addiction knowledge and training
which forms the base of understanding from which various professionals can build discipline-specific proficiencies.

Following this course participants should be able to:

 
• identify at least three indicators of growing up in an addicted family
  • discuss evidence-based treatment models
  • discuss ethical issues in addiction treatment
  • identify three factors demonstrating addiction as a brain disease
  • recognize the signs and symptoms of use and withdrawal from drugs of abuse
  • discuss three strategies of interventionwith substance abusing adolescents
  • discuss the cycle of trauma and addiction and identify specific treatment strategies
  • identify gender differences in addiction and their application to treatment

Registration
• Preregistration for the Addiction Training Institute is required before May 22, 2008 with the Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry Conference Office.

Continuing Education
All sessions for the ATI Course are offered for continuing education. Participants who attend all course work including the night sessions from June 9 through June 13, 2008 are eligible to receive 35 CE or 42 contact hours.
