Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry The Program The Department offers Masters' students with a strong interest in clinical social work an opportunity to enhance their understanding of human behavior, psychopathology, and the development of clinical assessment and treatment skills. The Clinical Social Work Section is comprised of seven full-time faculty members all of whom are board certified in clinical social work (NASW or ABE) and licensed for independent clinical social work practice in West Virginia. Patient populations include both inpatient and outpatient programs. Inpatient services at Chestnut Ridge Center tend to address more acute or severe problems including psychotic behavior, major depression, substance abuse, and dementia as well as the chronic mentally ill at William R. Sharpe Jr. Hospital. All inpatient programs utilize a multidisciplinary approach in assessment and care. Depending on the program and supervisor, social work students can participate in individual, family, and group therapies as well as clinical research. Outpatient programs at Chestnut Ridge Outpatient Services include chemical dependency; cognitive disorders and clinical gerontology, child, adolescent and family assessment and treatment, group work with adults and adolescents, and general outpatient therapy. In addition to the Department's clinical experience, there are several ongoing clinical education and training programs in which social work interns may participate. These include, for example, weekly grand rounds, study groups (e.g., thought disorders), Family Therapy, Group Therapy and Basic Psychotherapy courses, and Department sponsored professional continuing education conferences.
