The primary training site, Chestnut Ridge Center, is the psychiatric center for West Virginia University Hospitals (WVUH), located on the Robert C. Byrd Health Sciences Center campus. The hospital is a regional referral center providing fellows with the quantity and diversity of patient experience necessary for training. Other training sites include Children's Hospital at Ruby Memorial Hospital and Child Care Center, all part of WVUH. A formal curriculum is offered including supervision and rotations through inpatient, outpatient and day treatment services, consultation to courts, schools and community agencies. Fellows develop increasing competence in teaching administrative and clinical skills. Scholarly Activity
The fellows are required to participate in the annual off-campus two day Research Retreat where they choose a research project and a mentor and are required to present the outcomes at the School of Medicine’s Van Lier Research Day. The monthly Journal club encourages critical thinking and appreciation of research methods, and to review scientific data knowledgably. Grand Rounds, which occur weekly, also serve as a forum to interact with visiting speakers. Annual continuing medical education conference on child and adolescent psychopathology hosted by our department provides additional opportunities for learning. Research methods and scholarly activities are further enhanced via an abundance of seminar presentations led by our child psychologists, who are also the co directors of the Department’s Health Research Center.
