The WVU Department of Behavioral Medicine and Psychiatry is developing an evidence-based program with three goals:
- WVU Medical Librarians will round with our mental health teams to answer clinical questions by researching the most up-to-date evidence-based medical literature.
- WVU faculty and residents will study how to research evidence-based literature and how to perform systematic reviews of available studies, analyzing the results, strengths and weaknesses of the collated studies.
- WVU Medical Librarians will work together with our mental health faculty, residents, and interns to provide online evidence-based answers for West Virginia Mental Health and Primary-Care clinicans.
We shall use the standard "PICO" framework for proposing questions.
- Patient or Population (How do you describe your patient or patient group: age, gender, condition, etc.)
- Intervention or Indicator (In which intervention or indicator such as therapy, diagnostic test or exposure are you interested?
- Comparison or Control (With which alternative or different option do you want to compare your intervention?)
- Outcome (In which measurable outcome/s are you interested ?)
Example:
- Patients: children with depression
- Intervention: SSRI antidepressant
- Comparison: children not on SSRI antidepressants
- Outcome: levels of suicide
We are presently preparing online forms for West Virginia clinicians to use in asking for evidence-based answers.
