Welcome!
The Department of Community Medicine is a dynamic teaching, research, and service enterprise. We feature a CEPH-accredited Master of Public Health (MPH) program, an MS in School Health Education, a PhD in Public Health Sciences, combined degree programs such as the MD/MPH, and an Occupational Medicine Clinical Residency. Our graduate students come from diverse professional disciplines and undergraduate majors. We are planning to expand, and we are planning a transition to become a School of Public Health.
The student experience is worth noting. PhD and MPH students publish in leading peer-reviewed journals, present at national scientific meetings with their faculty mentors, and have secured good positions upon graduation. Our faculty and staff undertake a very active research program, often with a focus on the health of rural communities, consistent with our West Virginia roots. Our mission and focus are attracting media attention (see the “News” tab), research partnerships, and applications from prospective students throughout the US and around the globe. Such interest enhances our programs and enriches our teaching and research. We use a “practicum” and “internship” approach to a “real-world” capstone experience for our MPH students, in a diversity of settings. And, our students are engaged in community health and routinely seen “making a difference” through practical applications in our communities.
