MD/MPH Programs
CMED and the School of Medicine offer the MD/MPH degree. The vision of the MD/MPH Program is to bridge the gap between medicine and public health for tomorrow’s public health leadership. There are two pathways for completing the MD/MPH program. One option is to enroll in the MD/PH Track MPH program, and the second option is to enroll in the Combined MD/MPH Program.
Public Health Track MD/MPH Program
The Public Health Track MD/PH program is a new program offered to WVU medical students. The Public Health Track, largely online, is integrated with the regular MD curriculum. The students will complete 27 to 30 credits (as selected by the student) of the MPH program, during medical school enrollment.
Students can complete the MPH degree (12 to 15 credits - electives) during residency training in Internal Medicine, Family Medicine, Pediatrics, Obstetrics & Gynecology, or Emergency Medicine Residency Programs in post-graduate years 2 and 3 of training.
Students can apply during the first, second, third, or fourth year of medical school. No additional tuition is assessed for the Public Health Track MD/PH Program during medical school enrollment. Resident physicians enrolled in MPH courses to complete the MPH degree are expected to pay customary tuition associated with the degree.
Combined MD/MPH Program
The MD/MPH curriculum takes five years to complete, including three summers. After completing the first year of medical school, the student commences taking MPH classes in the summer. Students take a year off between year 2 and year 3 of medical school to complete the 42 credits of the MPH Program. The core MD/MPH requirements are very similar to the MPH Program requirements.
Students wishing to enter the combined MD/MPH program must apply separately to each academic unit and meet the requirements of both. Applicants must consult with the School of Medicine Associate Dean for Student Affairs and the Director, MD/MPH program prior to applying for admission.
The student is required to declare intent to pursue the MD/MPH by February 1 of the first year of medical school. Students enrolled in the Combined MD/MPH Program are expected to pay customary tuition and fees associated with the degree.
