PhD Application Process

The application process will open on December 1, 2008. The application deadline for entry in the 2009 cohort is February 15, 2009.

The following criteria will be used in rating applicants for admission to the program:

1. Cumulative GPA in undergraduate and graduate (if applicable) work.

2. Satisfactory achievement on the Graduate Record Examination or Medical College Admissions Test (if applying to the MD/PhD program).

3. Outstanding letters of reference.

4. Congruence between the applicant's career goals and research interests with the program’s objectives; and between the applicant's research interests and those of the faculty.

The following information is required for a complete application record:

1. A current curriculum vita (send to address below)

2. Transcripts of all undergraduate and graduate institutions (complete the report in the online application and have official transcripts sent to the address below)

3. Report of the Graduate Record Examination (GRE) or Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT; if applying to the combined MD/PhD program) (complete the report in the online application and have official scores sent to the address below).

4. A personal statement detailing your research interests, career goals and how the PhD in Public Health Sciences is necessary to achieving those goals (complete online in the application form).

5. Three letters of reference that address:

a. the applicant’s personal demonstrated interest in the course of study
b. the applicant’s skill in research and scholarly writing, and
c. the applicant’s likelihood for success in doctoral work.

Preferably, at least two letters will be from a former professor or faculty colleague of the applicant.

Please have the referee sign this form and place any additional evaluation statement on their letterhead. Please request that they seal in an envelope from their department and sign across the seal.
